Hole in the Wall

I will periodically post restaurant finds in this self-described haven of hedonism - the self-absorbed, oh-so-cool Vancouver. The truth is that Vancouver is really not cool as it thinks it is, an issue I will come back to some other day. But in one aspect Vancouver does rock; the restaurant scene here is terrific. No, I am not speaking of the post-uber-hip, post-fusion, post-westcoast high-end fare ala Lumie're or Gastropod. I am speaking of the unheralded and family run (Child labour, oh no) holes in the wall that pepper this city. They even have them in the West-side - in Kits, in Dunbar, and even in the British-Accented West Point Grey. But the best ones are in the East-side, no contest there. So here I go.

Au Petit Cafe': Do not let the name fool you. It ain't French - but in value for money probably outdoes the best French restaurants in town. This likely among the best fast-food places in the city, and certainly the best budget Vietnamese the city has to offer. The French Baguette Sandwiches - especially the spicy shredded Chicken is truly awesome - I use that word advisedly, as in Awe-inspiring, and not in the global teenage patois. At $3.50 - there is nothing like it anywhere.
Intersection of Main and 33rd.
